Oral Rinse for Canker Sores and Mouth Irritation

Used to soothe canker sores, gum irritation, or minor mouth injuries when commercial mouthwash or medicated rinses are not available.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) helps neutralize acids in the mouth and reduce inflammation, promoting faster healing of mouth ulcers, sore gums, or irritation caused by stress, illness, or rough food. This rinse is safe, shelf-stable, and can be used multiple times daily to ease discomfort in the field or during long-term emergencies.

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • 1 cup clean, lukewarm water (boiled or purified if needed)
  • Optional: pinch of sea salt (for added soothing and cleansing)

How to Use It

  • Mix baking soda (and optional salt) into the water until dissolved
  • Swish gently in the mouth for 30–60 seconds
  • Spit out — do not swallow
  • Use 2–3 times daily as needed, especially after meals or before bed

Warnings

  • Do not swallow the rinse — it’s for external (oral) use only
  • Discontinue if pain worsens or if infection signs appear
  • Not a substitute for antibiotics if there are signs of severe infection
  • Avoid acidic foods and drinks while healing (citrus, soda, vinegar)

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Baking soda: indefinite shelf life when dry and sealed
  • Prepared rinse: discard after each use — always make fresh
  • Keep dry ingredients labeled and stored with first-aid or hygiene kits

When to Use It

  • For mild mouth irritation or canker sores
  • After dental trauma, biting the inside of the mouth, or rough brushing
  • To reduce acid and promote a neutral oral environment during healing
  • As a general oral hygiene rinse when toothpaste or mouthwash is unavailable
