Breakwater Supply Fogland 25L Waterproof Backpack: My Overnight Readiness Loadout

Most preparedness content starts with the gear inside and treats the bag as an afterthought. That approach gets it backwards. The bag is the foundation. If it fails, everything inside fails with it.

Waterproof Overnight Readiness Loadout

This is a full walkthrough of my overnight readiness pack loadout. Every item in here was chosen because it earns its weight and solves a real problem. I’ll cover what each piece does and why it’s in the kit. But we start with the bag, because the bag is the whole reason this loadout works.

The Breakwater Supply Fogland 25L (Marsh Green): Why This Bag

The Fogland is not a regular backpack that claims to be waterproof. It is a submersible, IP68-rated waterproof backpack built from the ground up around a single promise: your gear stays dry, no matter what.

Breakwater Supply Fogland 25L Waterproof Backpack

IP68 means it has been independently tested and certified for full submersion. Not splash resistant. Not weather resistant. Submersible. Both the main compartment and the front pocket use drysuit-grade airtight zippers that hold a true waterproof seal. Breakwater Supply built and tested the Fogland to float with over 40 lbs of gear inside.

The shell is Hydrowall 420D Nylon TPU, a proprietary material that is lightweight, completely tear-proof, abrasion resistant, stain resistant, and wipes clean. There is no stitching on the seams. Every panel edge is fused using radio-frequency welding, which creates a permanent bond with zero gaps for water to find.

At 25L, the volume hits the right balance for a serious overnight loadout. Enough to carry real gear. Not so much that the pack becomes the problem. The 25L measures 20 x 13 x 7 inches and weighs 2.1 lbs empty. It comes with S-curved ergonomic shoulder straps, a molded EVA back panel with airflow channels, fast-drying neoprene shoulder padding, and a removable chest strap with an integrated emergency whistle.

Inside there is a padded 16-inch laptop sleeve with a false bottom to protect against ground impact. Outside there are attachment points for clipping additional gear, a front lash strap, and reflective elements on the shoulder straps and chest strap.

The Marsh Green colorway is low-profile in natural environments without going full tactical. It reads outdoors, not military. That matters for this type of kit.

Rated 4.95 out of 5 across 151 verified customer reviews. The 2-year Gear Up Warranty covers any product failure in all-weather use conditions.

This is the platform. Everything below is what goes inside it.

Here’s an overview of what’s included:

Small Blanket

A compact insulation layer that pairs with the hammock for a functional sleep system above freezing temperatures. Kept tightly rolled it takes up minimal space and adds meaningful thermal coverage when the temperature drops overnight. This is your primary warmth layer once you are off the ground.

Hammock

Sleeping off the ground is one of the most practical decisions you can make for an overnight. A hammock keeps you off cold, wet, or hard terrain, reduces contact with insects and ground moisture, and sets up faster than most shelter systems in forested terrain. A compact hammock fits in the Fogland with room to spare and serves as your primary sleep platform.

Vermont Glove “The Vermonter”

100% goat leather, hand-sewn in Randolph, Vermont. Double-stitched fingertip seams, outside seams for superior comfort, and a vein protector for longevity. Goatskin is naturally dexterous at this thickness, meaning you retain fine motor function while the glove is on. These are built for actual work in actual conditions: firewood processing, saw operation, and cold weather use. Hand protection is not optional in a serious field kit. If your hands go down, your capability goes down with them.

Wool Hat

Wool holds thermal value when wet, resists odor after extended wear, and compresses to almost nothing. A wool hat is one of the lightest items in this kit and one of the most functional when temperatures drop overnight at elevation or in shoulder seasons. Heat loss through an uncovered head is significant and entirely preventable.

Pair of Wool Socks

Wet feet destroy morale and create real injury risk on extended outings. Wool maintains insulating capacity even when saturated, which cotton completely loses. One extra pair kept dry inside the Fogland means you always have a dry option regardless of conditions. Blisters and trench foot are serious problems that a pair of socks prevents entirely.

Flint and Steel

Fire-starting redundancy is a requirement. The camp stove is the primary heat source. Flint and steel is the failsafe: no fuel to run out, no moving parts to break, no canister pressure to worry about in cold temperatures. It functions in wet conditions and has an essentially unlimited service life. It is in the kit because a single point of failure on fire is not acceptable.

Butane/Propane Camp Stove and Fuel Canister

A hot meal and hot water have an outsized impact on mental state during an overnight. The stove also works directly with the GRAYL Ti purifier system since the titanium outer cup can be heated on the burner. In cold conditions where pressing water feels slow, boiling gives you an additional layer of confidence. Compact canister stoves are light, reliable, and fast.

Compass

A baseplate compass has no battery, no screen, and no signal dependency. Paired with a paper topo map of your area it gives you reliable directional orientation regardless of conditions. Phones fail. Batteries die. A compass does not. This weighs almost nothing and its value in a genuine disorientation scenario is difficult to overstate. Navigation tools that require power are backups. A compass is a primary.

Paracord

550 paracord covers more scenarios than almost any other item in the kit. Hammock rigging, gear lashing, clothesline, trip line, improvised repairs, shoelace replacement, and a dozen other field applications. A generous coil takes up very little space. This is one of those items whose full utility only becomes clear when you actually need it.

MODL Infinity Tool Modular Straps

Stretchy silicone straps rated to 70 lbs that cinch, loop, and connect end to end for longer runs. They grip irregular shapes that cordage cannot and do not require knots. In practice these have been used to bundle firewood, secure a radio to gear, add a sternum strap to a pack, and lash items to the exterior of a bag. A few of these distributed through the kit quietly replace a collection of single-purpose solutions. They complement paracord rather than replace it, covering the quick-attach and cinch situations where tying a knot is slower than it needs to be.

2 Heavy Duty Carabiners

Non-locking heavy-duty carabiners are versatile attachment points used constantly in the field. Hammock rigging, clipping gear to the outside of the Fogland, improvised mechanical advantage systems, and securing loads. Two is the right count because most rigging situations require a point at each end simultaneously.

GRAYL GeoPress Ti 24oz Water Filter/Purifier

The water system. The GeoPress Ti outer cup is CP4 Grade 1 titanium with butterfly handles and a OnePress filtration cartridge that removes 99.99% of viruses, 99.9999% of bacteria, and 99.9% of protozoan cysts. Fill from any freshwater source and press in as little as 8 seconds per 24oz.

The titanium outer cup heats directly on the stove, making it a functional cook pot for the freeze-dried meal. It also accepts a French Press kit sold separately. Water purifier, cook vessel, and camp cup in a single compact unit. Cartridge lifespan is rated at 350 cycles. For a readiness pack that sees periodic use, that cartridge will last years before replacement.

Water Purification Tablets

The GRAYL Ti is the primary water system. Purification tablets are the zero-weight failsafe. If the purifier is lost, damaged, or unavailable, tablets restore access to clean water from any source. This costs almost nothing, adds negligible weight, and removes a catastrophic single point of failure from the most critical survival function in the kit.

1 MRE (Meal Ready to Eat)

Calorie-dense, no prep required, shelf-stable for years. The MRE is the fallback for situations where heat and clean water are not available. It is not the preferred meal but it keeps you functional when you need calories and cannot stop to cook. One MRE provides enough energy to keep moving through a full day under load.

1 Freeze-Dried Backpacking Meal

The primary hot meal. Add purified water from the GRAYL Ti, heat on the stove, and eat. Freeze-dried meals are significantly better than MREs for morale and taste, and on a straightforward overnight this is the meal you will actually look forward to. Hot food at camp is a genuine psychological reset after a hard day.

Titanium Spork

Light, durable, non-reactive, and does not retain heat the way aluminum does. The one eating utensil this kit needs. Titanium does not corrode, does not absorb food odors, and weighs almost nothing. One piece covers all eating tasks for the duration of the overnight.

Cardnl Zero Sugar Electrolytes (Repurposed Gasket Pill Bottle)

Pre-loaded loose powder in a small waterproof gasket-lid pill bottle. Cardnl uses five clean ingredients: Redmond Real Salt providing 830mg of sodium per serving, potassium chloride at 250mg, magnesium malate at 240mg, citric acid for flavor and mineral bioavailability, and Reb M stevia as the sweetener. Zero sugar, zero calories, zero carbs. Keto, vegan, and paleo compatible.

Mix one scoop into the GRAYL Ti after filtration. Electrolyte depletion under physical stress impairs decision-making, compounds fatigue, and causes cramps before most people recognize what is happening. Water alone does not solve dehydration caused by electrolyte loss. This does.

Salt (Repurposed Gasket Pill Bottle)

Straight salt for food preparation. Kept in a waterproof gasket-lid pill bottle to stay dry and accessible. It also functions as a wound care aid and electrolyte supplement in a pinch. This adds almost zero weight and zero bulk.

Activated Charcoal (Repurposed Gasket Pill Bottle)

One of the most field-proven remedies for ingestion emergencies. Activated charcoal adsorbs toxins in the gastrointestinal tract and is used in emergency medicine for certain poisoning events. It is not a replacement for medical care, but when medical care is not immediately available, having it is significantly better than not having it. Pre-loaded in a waterproof gasket-lid pill bottle alongside the other consumables.

Toor Knives Mullet T

Made in San Diego, California. CPM M4 steel, KG Gunkote finish, G10 handles with Toor’s signature texture for grip under load. 8.5 inches overall, 4-inch blade with a Tanto grind optimized for hard-surface penetration without blade flex. Rockwell hardness 59 to 61. The Breacher Ball is a press-fit tungsten carbide ball in the hardened tang, purpose-built for breaking standard, tempered, and safety glass.

Comes with a KYDEX sheath designed for horizontal carry or scout carry mid-back. CPM M4 holds a working edge under sustained hard use in a way that cheaper steels do not. If a fixed blade is going in the kit, it should be one built for the actual demands of field use.

Gerber Dual Force Multi-Tool

Pliers, multiple blade configurations, screwdrivers, wire cutters. The multi-tool covers the mechanical and detail work that a fixed blade is not designed for: gear repairs, wire manipulation, hardware adjustment, and opening equipment under field conditions. The Mullet T and the Gerber together cover the full range of cutting and mechanical tasks without significant overlap.

Small Folding Camp Saw

A folding saw processes firewood faster and more safely than axe work in most conditions. It takes up almost no space when folded and extends the wood-processing capability of the hatchet to larger diameter material. Saw cuts, hatchet splits.

Small Hatchet

Splitting kindling, driving stakes, processing smaller limbs, and general chopping work. The hatchet and folding saw function as a complete wood-processing system. Together they give you fire-building capability across a wide range of timber conditions without carrying full-size tools.

Monocular

A compact monocular provides magnified observation without the bulk of binoculars and without occupying both hands. In a field readiness context this covers route assessment before committing to a direction, identifying obstacles or potential threats at distance, reading signage from a safe position, and wildlife detection. The ability to observe before moving is an underappreciated capability that a small monocular provides at minimal weight and cost.

2 Heavy Duty Garbage Bags

Two contractor-grade garbage bags folded flat take up almost no space and serve an extraordinary range of functions: emergency rain poncho, ground cloth, waterproof liner for sensitive gear inside the pack, water collection vessel, improvised shelter material, and waste containment. They weigh essentially nothing and the cost is negligible. This is the highest value-to-weight ratio item in the kit.

Repurposed Gorilla Tape (Partial Roll)

A few wraps re-rolled onto itself to save space. Gorilla Tape repairs gear, patches holes in shelter material, waterproofs seams, reinforces improvised splints, and handles repairs on the pack itself if the exterior is damaged. It solves problems you cannot predict in advance, which is exactly the kind of item that earns its place in a kit this tight.

JaseAid Trauma Kit

Jase Medical built this kit around real trauma management, not a consumer first aid checklist. Contents include the Snakestaff Systems ETQ Wide Tourniquet, kaolin-impregnated hemostatic gauze for rapid clot acceleration, a Slishman Pressure Wrap, Z-fold compressed gauze, a chest seal, nasopharyngeal airway, aluminum eye shield, burn gel trauma dressing, compression bandage, trauma shears, an emergency Mylar thermal blanket, and field care educational cards.

The design priority is stopping severe bleeding, which is the leading cause of preventable death in traumatic injury. The tourniquet is a quality component, not a knockoff. The hemostatic gauze is real. The instructional cards allow correct deployment under stress without prior formal training.

Jase also offers a Trauma Pill Pack sold separately that includes prescription-grade antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, pain management, and anti-nausea medication for post-injury field care.

Olight Warrior Tactical Flashlight

2,300 lumens from a compact EDC-sized body. TIR optic lens, 4-level battery and brightness indicator around the side switch, built-in proximity sensor that drops output automatically when pointed at nearby objects, and a dual-switch system: side switch for mode cycling, tactical tail switch for direct Turbo or Strobe in a single press. Up to 55 days of runtime depending on mode. IPX8 waterproof rated. This is the primary light in the kit and it handles everything from camp tasks to active threat situations.

Headlamp

Hands-free light for camp work, first aid, navigation, and any task where you need continuous illumination without occupying a hand. The Olight Warrior 3S is the primary light. The headlamp is the working light. These serve different functions and neither replaces the other. Carry both.

Rocky Talkie Expedition Radio

5-watt GMRS radio built and tested in Colorado. IP67 waterproof to 1 meter submersion, 4 to 6 day battery life on a single charge, shatterproof LED screen, 22 channels, NOAA weather alert access, 8 GMRS repeater channels, and dual-channel monitoring. Typical backcountry range of 2 to 8 miles in real terrain.

When cell service ends, this radio maintains communication with a partner or monitoring group and provides access to weather updates. It was designed for actual outdoor conditions and the battery life is genuine, not ideal-conditions marketing. GMRS requires an FCC license. The license covers your entire household for 10 years at a cost of $35 with no examination required.

Anker 622 MagGo Magnetic Battery

5,000mAh capacity, 4.13 x 2.62 x 0.50 inches, MagSafe-compatible magnetic wireless charging for compatible iPhones, USB-C recharge input. For an overnight kit, this keeps your phone operational for navigation, communication, and documentation without a dangling cable. The magnetic attachment holds directly to the back of a compatible phone while in use. Slim enough to slide into any pocket in the Fogland without adding noticeable bulk.

Faraday Defense Jacket

A phone-sized Faraday bag that blocks all wireless signals including cellular, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Useful in privacy-sensitive situations where you do not want your location broadcast, and in grid-down or EMP scenarios where you want to protect device electronics from a damaging electromagnetic pulse. It folds flat, adds no meaningful weight, and provides a capability most kits do not include.

Springfield Armory Hellcat 3 Micro-Compact

9mm, micro-compact frame, OSP (Optics Ready Platform). The Hellcat 3 delivers serious capacity and shootability in a footprint small enough to pack without sacrificing the rest of the loadout. If a defensive firearm is part of your readiness plan, this is a serious tool rather than a compromise. Know your local carry laws. Store and carry with an appropriate holster.

Cash in Small Bills

Electronic payment systems fail during infrastructure disruptions, power outages, and network-dependent emergencies. Small bills transact when nothing else does. Keep a practical amount, nothing that makes the pack a target. This is simple, takes up almost no space, and is the kind of thing you will be grateful for having when systems are down.

NOBS Toothpaste Tablets and Toothbrush

Toothpaste tablets are waterless, take up almost no space, and eliminate the tube that can leak or freeze. Oral hygiene on overnights matters more than most people account for. Dental discomfort compounds under physical stress and poor sleep and can become a serious focus and morale problem in a relatively short time. This solves it at negligible weight and cost.

Body Wipes

A pack of wipes handles personal hygiene when a shower is not available. Reduces skin friction, manages bacterial load during sustained physical activity, and prevents the morale degradation that compounds over a long overnight. This is the easiest and cheapest contribution to field comfort in the kit.

Bear Spray

Bear spray is the highest-rated deterrent against aggressive wildlife encounters, with an effective range of 20 to 35 feet and a cloud deployment that does not require precise aim under stress. For anyone moving through terrain where bears, mountain lions, or feral dogs are a realistic concern, it covers a threat gap that nothing else in this kit addresses at that range.

What most people do not talk about is the broader utility. Bear spray is a serious human deterrent as well. The active ingredient is capsaicin at a concentration significantly higher than personal defense OC sprays. It incapacitates by causing immediate and intense inflammation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. In a situation involving an aggressive person at distance, bear spray creates a wide deterrent cloud that buys time and space without requiring the fine motor skills that a firearm demands under extreme stress.

It is not a replacement for the Hellcat in this kit. It is a different tool for a different distance and a different level of force. Having both means you have options across a wider range of scenarios rather than one response to every threat.

Clip it to the outside of the Fogland where it is accessible in under two seconds. Bear spray you have to dig for is bear spray that does not get used in time.

A Few More Things Worth Adding

This kit is well-rounded. Depending on your specific environment, a few additions are worth considering:

A packable rain shell. The Fogland keeps your gear dry. It does not keep you dry. A lightweight packable shell provides personal weather protection the bag alone cannot.

A printed topo map of your area. The compass is in the kit. A paper topo map means you are not dependent on phone battery or cell service for navigation. Print or purchase one for your local region and fold it in with the kit.

A second lighter. Adding an inexpensive waterproof lighter gives you three levels of fire-starting capability: stove, lighter, flint and steel. That third layer costs almost nothing and removes another single point of failure.

Bottom Line

The Breakwater Supply Fogland 25L is the right platform for a serious overnight readiness kit. IP68 submersibility, Hydrowall TPU construction, welded seams, airtight drysuit-grade zippers, and a 2-year warranty on a bag that actually earns the waterproof label. It floats. It survives submersion. It wipes clean. The Marsh Green colorway works in natural terrain without calling attention.

Everything in this loadout covers shelter, fire, navigation, water, food, medical, communication, lighting, power, security, and hygiene. Nothing is a placeholder. Every item earned its spot.

This is not about looking prepared. It is about being prepared.

Prep hard, people.
