All-Purpose Surface Cleaner

Used to clean, disinfect, and deodorize surfaces safely with long-shelf-life ingredients. This vinegar-based cleaner combines pine needles, cinnamon, and citric acid for natural antibacterial, antifungal, and degreasing power. It’s made entirely from pantry and foraged items, making it ideal for off-grid living, sustainable routines, and preparedness storage.

Vinegar acts as a mild acid to cut grease and kill odor-causing bacteria, while pine and cinnamon contribute antimicrobial and deodorizing effects. Citric acid enhances descaling and helps stabilize the infusion, keeping it effective for up to a year. Each component stores long-term, allowing you to make fresh batches whenever needed without relying on commercial products.

Ingredients (for a Half-Gallon Mason Jar)

  • 4 cups white vinegar (5% acidity)
  • 2 to 3 cups fresh pine needles (rinsed)
  • 4 to 6 cinnamon sticks (broken in half)
  • 2 teaspoons citric acid (added after straining)

Optional Add-Ins

  • Peel from 1 orange or lemon (adds scent and degreasing)
  • 6 to 8 whole cloves (antifungal and deodorizing)
  • 10 drops essential oil (tea tree, eucalyptus, or orange)

How to Make It

  1. Use a clean half-gallon mason jar. If using a metal lid, line it with parchment to prevent corrosion.
  2. Place pine needles, cinnamon sticks, and optional ingredients into the jar.
  3. Pour in vinegar until contents are fully submerged.
  4. Seal tightly and store in a cool, dark location for 2–3 weeks, shaking occasionally.
  5. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh filter.
  6. Add 2 teaspoons citric acid to the strained liquid and stir until fully dissolved.
  7. Transfer the finished cleaner to a spray bottle for use.

How to Use It

  • For general cleaning, dilute 1:1 with water.
  • Use undiluted on tough grime or heavily soiled areas.
  • Safe for glass, mirrors, sinks, and non-porous surfaces.
  • Avoid using on natural stone such as granite or marble; acids can etch stone.

Warnings

  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
  • Do not mix with bleach or other strong cleaners.
  • Always test a small surface area before use.
  • Avoid use on waxed, aluminum, or porous stone finishes.

Storage & Shelf Life

  • While infusing: up to 1 month sealed and stored away from light.
  • After straining and adding citric acid: up to 12 months in a sealed spray bottle.
  • Vinegar, pine, and citric acid are shelf-stable long-term when kept cool and uncontaminated.

When to Use It

  • For everyday cleaning in homes, cabins, or off-grid environments.
  • To maintain hygiene during supply shortages or power outages.
  • As a non-toxic, sustainable cleaner for preparedness kits and long-term use.
