Used to reduce odors and moisture buildup in mattresses, cushions, sleeping pads, and upholstered gear when regular washing is not possible.
Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a gentle, non-toxic deodorizer that absorbs moisture and neutralizes odors trapped in fabric and padding. In off-grid, field, or long-term use conditions where laundering is limited, this method keeps bedding and seating areas fresher and more sanitary between cleanings.
Ingredients
- Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
- Clean cloth, brush, or hand broom
How to Use It
- Lightly sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the surface of the mattress, pad, or cushion
- Let sit for 30–60 minutes to absorb odors and moisture
- Remove by:
- Brushing off with a clean, dry hand broom or stiff-bristle brush
- Wiping gently with a damp cloth (for smooth fabrics)
- Beating the item outdoors (pads or cushions) to shake off excess
- Repeat as needed during long-term use or high humidity
Warnings
- Avoid over-wetting fabric during cleanup — use a dry method when possible
- Do not use on damp or moldy items without addressing the source of moisture
Storage & Shelf Life
- Store baking soda in a dry, sealed container away from strong odors
- Shelf life is indefinite if uncontaminated
When to Use It
- To freshen mattresses or pads between use or in long-term shelter settings
- When moisture, sweat, or odors build up from repeated use
- To refresh items like seat cushions, bedrolls, or tent pads in field conditions
- As part of regular hygiene maintenance in off-grid or no-laundry scenarios
