Natural Relief for Itching, Rashes, and Bites

Used to relieve skin irritation, itching, and minor rashes in austere, off-grid, or first-aid-limited environments.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can be applied topically to reduce discomfort from insect bites, minor rashes, poison ivy, or general skin inflammation. It helps calm irritation by neutralizing surface pH, drawing out toxins, and providing a soothing, anti-itch effect. This remedy is particularly useful when antihistamines, hydrocortisone, or calamine lotion are unavailable.

Ingredients

  • Pure sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • Clean water (warm or cool)
  • Small container for mixing
  • Clean cloth, gauze, or cotton pads
  • Optional: apple cider vinegar or oatmeal (for bath-style soaks)

How to Use It

  • For a paste (bug bites, rashes, poison ivy): Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with just enough water to form a thick paste. Apply directly to affected skin. Let sit for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Repeat up to 3 times daily.
  • For a compress (larger irritated areas): Dissolve 1–2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 cup of water. Soak a clean cloth in the solution, wring out gently, and place on the affected area for 10–20 minutes.
  • For a full-body or localized soak (itchy skin, mild rash): Add ½ cup of baking soda to a warm bath or foot/hand soak. Soak for 15–30 minutes, then pat dry.

Optional Additions

  • Add a splash of apple cider vinegar to the soak or compress to enhance anti-itch effect (may sting broken skin)
  • Combine with colloidal oatmeal or dried powdered oats for added soothing relief in baths

Warnings

  • Do not apply to open wounds, broken skin, or infected areas
  • Discontinue if rash worsens or irritation increases
  • Not a substitute for professional care in severe allergic reactions or infections
  • Do not use near the eyes, mucous membranes, or on infants without guidance

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store baking soda in a sealed, dry container
  • Shelf life is indefinite when kept uncontaminated
  • Keep away from strong odors or moisture

When to Use It

  • For insect bites, poison ivy, hives, or general itch in the field
  • To relieve irritation when creams, antihistamines, or calamine are not available
  • During survival or homestead tasks that expose skin to plants, bugs, or heat
  • As a safe, natural solution for recurring mild skin irritation
