Natural Surface Cleaner & Scrub

Used to clean counters, cookware, sinks, and other household surfaces without harsh chemicals or abrasives—ideal for off-grid living, field shelters, or low-supply environments.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is a mild abrasive and natural deodorizer that can be used as a non-toxic cleaner on a wide range of surfaces. It removes grime, food residue, and grease buildup without scratching finishes, making it suitable for daily cleaning tasks in shelters, kitchens, and field setups. When mixed with water, it forms a gentle paste that cuts through buildup while remaining safe for food prep areas and bare hands.

Ingredients

  • Pure sodium bicarbonate (baking soda; no added scents or chemicals)
  • Clean water
  • Optional: vinegar or lemon juice (for additional cleaning power)
  • Soft cloth, sponge, or scrub brush (non-metallic)

How to Use It

  • To clean general surfaces (counters, tile, wood, plastic): Sprinkle dry baking soda directly on the surface or onto a damp cloth. Scrub gently and wipe clean with a damp rag.
  • To make a cleaning paste: Mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water to form a thick paste. Apply to sinks, grout lines, stovetops, cookware, or residue-prone areas. Scrub with a cloth or brush, then rinse or wipe clean.
  • To boost grease-cutting power: Add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice to the paste to create a fizzy reaction that helps loosen grime. Let sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
  • To deodorize while cleaning: Use dry baking soda as a scouring powder inside coolers, food storage bins, or trash containers, then rinse or wipe dry.

Warnings

  • Avoid using on raw aluminum, soft wood, or polished surfaces that may dull with abrasion
  • Do not mix with bleach or chemical cleaners
  • Spot test if unsure of surface durability (especially on painted or delicate finishes)
  • Avoid storing wet paste mixtures long-term — prepare fresh for each use

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store dry baking soda in a sealed container, away from moisture and strong odors
  • Shelf life is indefinite when stored properly
  • If preparing in bulk for cleaning kits, label clearly and keep separate from food-use containers

When to Use It

  • For daily surface cleaning in off-grid kitchens, homestead shelters, or outdoor camps
  • As a soap-free alternative for scrubbing greasy pans, pots, and utensils
  • To remove food, soot, or oil buildup on hard surfaces
  • In low-resource conditions where commercial cleaners or sanitizers are unavailable
