Used in survival situations to reduce the risk of thyroid damage from radioactive iodine exposure during a nuclear event or fallout scenario.
Lugol’s Iodine contains elemental iodine and potassium iodide in water — both forms are readily absorbed by the thyroid. In the event of a nuclear accident or detonation, radioactive iodine (I-131) can be released into the environment and inhaled or ingested. The thyroid gland rapidly absorbs iodine, whether stable or radioactive. By saturating the thyroid with non-radioactive iodine from Lugol’s solution, you block the uptake of the harmful kind — a strategy known as thyroid blocking. This is a well-documented protective measure supported by international nuclear emergency protocols.
Lugol’s Iodine works for radiation protection, because the body converts the iodine to iodide — but KI (potassium iodide tablets) is the direct form used in official emergency stockpiles due to precise dosing and formulation. If you do not have access to potassium iodide tablets, this is your next best bet.
Ingredients
- Lugol’s Iodine Solution (2%) – stored in amber glass with tight-fitting cap
- Clean water or juice (to dilute for ingestion)
- Non-metallic measuring spoon or dropper
- Knowledge of correct dosage based on age and risk
How to Use It
Thyroid Protection During Radiation Exposure
(Use only when radioactive iodine exposure is imminent or confirmed)
Adults (including children over 12 and >150 lbs):
- Take 100 mg of iodine daily during exposure
- This equals 20 drops of Lugol’s 2% solution per day (each drop ≈ 5 mg total iodine)
Children (3–12 years):
- Take 50 mg iodine daily
- That’s 10 drops of Lugol’s 2% per day
Infants (1 month–3 years):
- Take 25 mg iodine daily
- That’s 5 drops of Lugol’s 2% per day
Infants under 1 month and pregnant women: Require specialized dosing (consult emergency medical guidance).
Always dilute in water or juice to minimize stomach irritation. Take once daily, and only while exposure persists (typically 7–14 days max).
Warnings
- Use only during confirmed radiation exposure or under civil defense/emergency instruction.
- Do not use as a daily supplement (in this way) — high doses over time can cause thyroid dysfunction.
- Individuals with thyroid disorders, iodine sensitivity, or autoimmune conditions should use with extreme caution.
- Stop use and seek medical attention if symptoms like rash, swelling, or palpitations occur.
Storage & Shelf Life
- Unopened (amber glass bottle): Shelf life of 3–5 years, or longer if stored in a cool, dark, and dry place.
- Opened bottle: Use within 12–18 months for maximum potency.
- Always store tightly sealed, away from heat, light, and moisture.
- Never store in plastic or metal containers, which iodine can degrade.
