Used to protect metal, leather, and rubber from moisture, oxygen, and environmental degradation during storage or long periods of non use.
Petroleum jelly forms a stable barrier that blocks oxygen and moisture. On metal, it slows corrosion and rust. On leather and rubber, it reduces drying, cracking, and stiffness. It is not a permanent treatment but performs well when purpose built products are unavailable.
Ingredients
- Petroleum jelly
Tools
- Clean cloth or rag
- Soft brush for seams or hardware
- Gloves if working with firearms or greasy components
How to Use It
- Clean and dry the surface completely before application
- Apply a thin, even coating using a cloth or brush
- For metal tools and hardware, coat lightly and store in sealed containers when possible
- For firearm storage only, wipe exterior metal surfaces and lightly coat moving parts, then store unloaded
- For leather boots, gloves, and sheaths, rub a very thin layer into the surface and seams
- For rubber seals and gaskets, work a small amount into the material to restore flexibility
- Reapply as needed during long term storage or seasonal changes
Warnings
- Not a substitute for proper firearm lubricants during active use
- Excess application can attract dust and grit
- Not intended for food contact surfaces
- Leather may darken slightly after application
Storage & Shelf Life
- Store sealed in a cool, dry place.
- Indefinite shelf life when uncontaminated.
- Works best when paired with desiccants and sealed containers for long term storage.
When to Use It
- Long term storage of tools and spare hardware
- Corrosion protection during humid or coastal conditions
- Firearm storage when not in active use
- Preserving leather and rubber gear in dry or cold environments
- Temporary waterproofing for seams and stitching
