Water Purification with Potassium Permanganate

Used to disinfect and purify water when filters or chemical tablets are not available. Potassium permanganate powder is a strong oxidizer that kills bacteria, viruses, and many parasites when diluted correctly. It can make clear water safe for drinking in emergency or off-grid situations.

Only a very small amount of powder is needed. When potassium permanganate powder is mixed into water, it starts dark purple and gradually lightens as it reacts. As disinfection occurs, the color changes to pink, then fades to clear or slightly brown. This color change shows that the reaction is complete and the compound has finished disinfecting the water.

Ingredients

  • Potassium permanganate powder (food or technical grade)
  • Clear water (not muddy or cloudy)
  • Non-metal container such as glass or HDPE
  • Measuring tool or small scoop (plastic preferred)

How to Make It

  • Fill a clean container with clear water
  • Add a very small pinch of potassium permanganate powder per liter of water
  • Stir until the powder dissolves completely; the water should be a light pink color only
  • Let the mixture sit undisturbed for at least 30 minutes before drinking
  • If the color appears dark purple or strong magenta, dilute with more clean water and repeat the waiting period

How to Use It

  • Use only with clear water for best results; cloudy water can block disinfection
  • Stir well and let stand for at least 30 minutes to allow the compound to work
  • Prepare only the amount you plan to use and discard any leftover solution after use
  • When the water fades from pink to brown or clear, it shows that the potassium permanganate has fully reacted with organic material and microorganisms, completing the disinfection process.

Warnings

  • Do not drink if the water remains dark purple or highly colored
  • Never ingest undissolved powder
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin
  • Keep the powdered compound away from glycerin, oils, or flammable materials

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store dry potassium permanganate powder in a sealed glass or HDPE container
  • Keep in a cool, dark, and dry location away from moisture and sunlight
  • When uncontaminated and stored properly, it remains stable indefinitely

When to Use It

  • During emergencies when you lack access to filters or tablets
  • For disinfecting small batches of clear water in field or off-grid settings
  • As part of a preparedness or survival kit for last-resort water purification
