Wool Blanket Break In

If you’ve ever purchased a brand new wool blanket, you might have noticed it can feel a bit scratchy and stiff right out of the package. With a little care and attention, you can transform that new blanket into a soft, cozy companion that might just last a lifetime.

Step-by-Step: Breaking in Your Wool Blanket

Check Manufacturer’s Instructions

Before you do anything, always check the care label or manufacturer’s instructions. This will ensure you don’t accidentally damage or shrink your new purchase.

Washing with Care

Cold Wash Wool Blanket

Place your blanket in the washing machine, adding a splash of fabric softener and a bit of laundry detergent. Select a gentle cycle with cold water to protect the wool fibers and prevent shrinkage.

Fabric softener is not required and should only be used the first time you wash and break in your new wool blanket. You should not use fabric softener regularly when washing your wool fabrics. If you do you’ll deal with residue build up, reduced moisture absorption, and loss of lanolin.

Drying and Lint Management

Dry Cycle

Once washed, it’s time to dry. Set your dryer to a low heat setting. Wool can produce a surprising amount of lint, especially on the first few washes. To prevent any issues, set the dryer for a 10 minute cycle, clearing out any accumulated lint every 10 minutes.

The Bonus Softening Step

For those looking to achieve maximum softness, consider giving your blanket a vinegar rinse. This age-old trick can further soften wool fibers, making your blanket even more comfortable.

The Long-Lasting Benefits of Wool

Once you’ve broken in your wool blanket, you’ll have a versatile and durable companion ready for adventure and survival for years to come.

Whether you’re adding it to a survival kit, packing it for camping adventures, or simply draping it over your couch for those chilly movie nights, a wool blanket is a timeless addition to any home or kit.
