Used to cleanse the scalp, remove oil buildup, and maintain hair hygiene in off-grid, emergency, or low-supply environments when commercial shampoo is not available.
Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can be used as a basic hair cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and residue. Its alkaline nature helps break down grime while gently exfoliating the scalp. In survival or homestead conditions, it serves as a simple and effective alternative to soap-based products, especially when water is limited or storage space is at a premium. Though not suitable for everyday use long term, it offers a valuable backup method for keeping the hair and scalp clean.
Ingredients
- Pure sodium bicarbonate (baking soda; no additives)
- Clean, warm water
- Optional: diluted apple cider vinegar (for conditioning)
- Cup or squeeze bottle
- Optional: wide-tooth comb or brush
How to Use It
- Make a hair cleansing solution: Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 cup of warm water
Stir until fully dissolved; use immediately - Apply to dry or damp hair: Slowly pour the mixture over your scalp and roots. Massage gently for 30–60 seconds to lift oil and buildup. Rinse thoroughly with warm water (if available).
- Optional follow-up rinse (to rebalance pH): Mix 1–2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water. Pour over hair and rinse or leave in for added softness and shine.
- Let hair dry naturally; comb or brush as needed
Frequency of Use
- Use once per week or as needed
- Not recommended for daily use—overuse may dry out hair or disrupt scalp balance
- Works best for oily or short-term unwashed hair; may not suit all hair types
Warnings
- Avoid eye contact — rinse thoroughly if contact occurs
- May cause dryness or frizz in some hair types if overused
- Not a replacement for long-term scalp treatments or conditioners
- If scalp irritation or flaking develops, reduce frequency or discontinue
Storage & Shelf Life
- Store dry baking soda in a sealed, moisture-free container
- Shelf life is indefinite when kept uncontaminated
- Prepare only what you’ll use for each wash — no need to pre-mix and store
When to Use It
- During extended fieldwork, bug-outs, or homestead life with no access to shampoo
- As a minimalist hair care solution in long-term kits or camp setups
- After physical exertion or exposure to dirt, sweat, or oil buildup
- To remove product or sebum buildup when rinsing is possible
