Used to reduce odor, moisture, and insect activity in bedding and nesting areas without harming chickens, chicks, or livestock.
This simple powder blend uses sodium bicarbonate and food-grade diatomaceous earth to neutralize ammonia odors, absorb moisture, and help deter mites or insects. It’s safe for regular use in chicken coops, brooders, and animal shelters where chemical deodorizers are not appropriate. Optional herbs can add a clean scent and mild insect-repelling benefits.
Ingredients
- 1 part sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
- 1 part food-grade diatomaceous earth
- Optional: ½ part dried herbs (lavender, eucalyptus, lemon grass, rosemary, or mint)
How to Use It
- Sprinkle a light, even layer on the floor of the coop before adding bedding
- Dust into corners, under roosts, and in nesting boxes as needed
- Reapply during regular cleanings or when odor or moisture builds
- Do not overapply or allow dust to become airborne in confined spaces
- Use herbs or essential oils sparingly and away from direct contact zones
Warnings
- Do not use with chicks younger than 2 weeks without ensuring good ventilation
- Avoid applying when birds are present to reduce dust inhalation
- Do not substitute lime (calcium hydroxide) — it can irritate skin and lungs
- Replace bedding regularly to prevent ammonia buildup
Storage & Shelf Life
- Store dry in a sealed container away from strong odors or moisture
- Shelf life is indefinite if kept uncontaminated
- Label clearly and keep separate from feed or food-safe materials
When to Use It
- As a weekly maintenance step in active coops or brooders
- After deep cleans to keep bedding fresh longer
- In nesting boxes, under roosts, or anywhere moisture and odor collect
- For added freshness and insect control in feed or tool storage areas (herbs only)
