Why I wanted a booster

Rural life is peaceful until the internet drops. For me that means Starlink going offline. Add no cell service and quiet becomes a real vulnerability. One is none, two is one, and communication belongs in the plan alongside food, water, and gear.

This is not about streaming video. It is about checking the weather, reaching family, or calling for help if someone is hurt or a wildfire breaks out nearby. A reliable signal does not take away the solitude of a cabin. It makes it safer.

Real numbers, before and after

I measured with the field test mode built into my phone. These are raw signal readings, not bars on a screen.

Going from -123 dBm to -86 dBm is a 37 dB gain. Every 3 dB is about double the signal power, so that is a major increase. At -123 dBm calls drop, texts fail, and internet is nearly impossible. At -86 dBm the phone holds a clear, steady connection.

Check your own signal

On an iPhone, dial *3001#12345#* and press call. That opens Field Test Mode, where you can read RSRP and SINR. Take a reading before and after you install a booster.

What is in the kit

There are four main parts: the outside antenna, the interior panel antenna, the amplifier, and the cables that connect them.

  • The directional outside antenna mounts on a pole, aims at a distant tower, and pulls in a faint signal.
  • The amplifier boosts that signal, and a slim interior panel rebroadcasts it inside.
  • The included telescoping pole reaches up to 24 feet, enough to clear most roofs and treelines.
  • It boosts signal for all carriers and most phones. There is nothing to manage and no devices to reconnect.

I did not need the pole. I already had a line-of-sight mount on the side of my house from an older internet setup that Starlink replaced.

Installation

Plan on about an hour with basic tools.

  1. 1Mount the outside antennaRoof edge, pole, wall mount, or even a nearby tree. The telescoping mast saves you from scaffolding and tall ladders.
  2. 2Place the interior panelOn a wall or shelf. It covers up to 5,000 square feet, enough for most cabins.
  3. 3Plug it inIt runs on a standard outlet, and the unit adjusts itself to the best available signal.
  4. 4Fine-tune if you wantThe optional mobile app helps you aim the antenna more precisely. You do not need cell service to install it. Everything works offline.

That outlet is a good one to tie into a whole-home solar, inverter, and backup battery setup like mine.

Bottom line

The weBoost Cabin improves cell signal in places where most people give up. It is simple to install, works quietly in the background, and disappears once it is in place. Does the weboost cabin actually work

It did for me. With no booster my phone read -123 dBm RSRP, a dead zone. With the weBoost Cabin on it read -86 dBm, a 37 dB gain. Calls now go through and texts send right away.

How do I check cell signal strength on an iphone

Dial *3001#12345#* and press call. That opens Field Test Mode, where you can read raw signal metrics such as RSRP and SINR instead of bars. Take a reading before and after installing a booster to see the true difference.

How much area does the weboost cabin cover

The interior panel covers up to 5,000 square feet, which is enough for most cabins. The outside directional antenna mounts on an included telescoping pole that reaches up to 24 feet to clear roofs and treelines.

How hard is it to install a weboost cabin

About an hour with basic tools. Mount the outside antenna on a roof edge, pole, wall, or tree, set the interior panel on a wall or shelf, connect the cables to the amplifier, and plug into a standard outlet. It works with no cell service during setup.

What is a good rsrp signal strength

In my test, -123 dBm RSRP was barely usable: calls dropped and texts failed. At -86 dBm the signal was fair and steady, with calls and messages going through right away. Every 3 dB is about double the signal power.
