How do I remove rust with citric acid?

Citric acid converts rust into soluble citrate salts that rinse away with water, and hot water speeds the reaction. Afterward the bare metal has to be dried and oiled so it does not rust again.

What's the ratio of citric acid to water for descaling?

Descaling takes a fairly weak solution, much lighter than a rust soak. The acid reacts with limescale and turns it into soluble salts that rinse away, and heat speeds it up.

How long do I soak rusty tools in citric acid?

It depends on how deep the rust goes: light surface rust clears fairly quickly, while heavy corrosion needs a much longer soak. Check progress regularly and keep cast iron soaks short, since acid pits it.

Can I use citric acid on cast iron or aluminum?

Cast iron can be treated, but only with a limited soak, because the acid will pit and etch the surface over a long exposure. Rinse, dry, and oil it right after.

Food-grade citric acid dissolved in water reacts with limescale and turns it into salts that rinse away. It is food-safe and fume-free, so it suits anything that touches drinking water.
