A true plant-oil soap that lifts grease gently, though an acid like vinegar will curdle it.

Good to know

Bar, liquid, and how long it keeps. Castile is a gentle plant-oil soap, named for the Castile region of Spain, and it comes two ways. Liquid castile is made with potassium hydroxide, which keeps it pourable, while a bar is made with sodium hydroxide, which sets it hard, so a grated bar dissolves into a soft gel rather than a thin liquid (Recipe 31.1); both are the same mild soap. A sealed bar or bottle of concentrate keeps for years, but once you dilute it with water at home it has no preservative and lasts only a few weeks to a couple of months, so mix small batches. Heavier laundry bars like Fels-Naptha and Zote are a different animal, built on stronger synthetic detergents that degrease harder but dry the skin, so save those for laundry and cleaning, not your body. One rule covers every true soap: adding vinegar or any acid curdles it back into greasy fatty acids, so keep soap and acids apart.
