Why it's on my list
The bag in my Faraday electronics kit: a roll-top dry bag lined with three layers of nickel-copper, so the laptop, the radios and the spare phone are shielded and dry in one place, and it carries on a strap. The full build fits in the 20 or 30 liter.

What it is
A roll-top dry bag that is also a Faraday bag: triple layers of CYBER NC nickel-copper fabric inside, over 85 dB of attenuation, for laptops, tablets and radios. Watertight seal, a front zip pocket for cards and small items, two straps. 5, 10, 20 or 30 liters.
What it is
A roll-top dry bag that is itself the Faraday shield: the small build of my electronics kit
A Faraday bag does one thing: it keeps a fast electromagnetic pulse from reaching what is inside. That covers the pulse from a nuclear detonation and the everyday case, a phone or a key fob that cannot be tracked or cloned while sealed; it does not cover a solar storm, which hits the grid, not a phone in a drawer. The difference is on understanding EMP and the EMP scenario. This bag is the small build of my Faraday electronics kit: one bag, five things, grab it and go. Waterproof as well as shielded, so it doubles as the dry bag for the bug-out bag.
The shielding, and how it fails
The seal is the shield
Why it matters
Three layers of nickel-copper fabric rated over 85 dB, and the bag is only shielded while it's sealed. Most failures are a bag left open a finger's width. Nothing should touch the lining: a towel, foam or a cheap inner bag between the device and the metalized layer, because a device pressed against the shield is coupled to it. Nest what you cannot replace, two bags one inside the other, for the backup phone and the drives.
How it works
- Triple layers of CYBER NC nickel-copper fabric
- Over 85 dB attenuation
- Roll-top: fold it twice and clip it
- Keep a towel or inner bag between the device and the lining
- Test it: seal your phone in and call it. Silence means it works. Test again yearly; creases open gaps
The bag
A dry bag with a laptop compartment, a front pocket and two straps
Why it matters
The 10 holds a phone, a radio, a power bank, a light and cables with room to spare; the 20 or 30 takes the laptop and the full build. The watertight seal is the same roll-top that makes the shield, so one closure does both jobs. It carries on a strap like any sling, which is the reason for the small build.
What's on it
- Watertight roll-top seal
- Laptop compartment
- Front zip pocket for cards and small items
- Two straps
- 5, 10, 20 or 30 liters; the store prices each size
What goes in the 10 liter
The small build, from my Faraday electronics page
Why it matters
An old unlocked phone, charged and loaded before it goes in: offline maps of your state, photos of IDs and prescriptions, the site's pages you use saved to My Manual as PDFs, and the apps for the radios. It works on Wi-Fi with no plan and takes a spare SIM. The radio is the FRS or GMRS handheld from my list; the Anker 548 on my page charges a phone about a dozen times. What to put on a backup laptop and a portable SSD for the full build is on the backup laptop page and the portable SSD page.
The small build
- Backup phone, loaded with offline maps, documents and the radio apps
- One GMRS or FRS radio
- Power bank
- Flashlight
- Cables and a USB drive
Keep it working
Every three months, twice a year, and always closed
Why it matters
Every three months: charge the power bank, the phone and the radio. Twice a year: update the drive and the phone's files, test the bag with a phone call, check the seal for wear. Open it, take out one thing, close it. Write the plan on paper and put it in the bag: the channels, the meeting points, who has which radio, which my no cell, no internet page walks through. The full build, every device in its own jacket inside a hard case, is on the same Faraday page.
The habits
- Every 3 months: charge everything inside
- Twice a year: update the files, test with a phone call, check the seal
- Keep it sealed; open one thing at a time
- The plan, on paper, inside
