Basic hand tools (no power needed)
These are the 17 hand tools I keep for home repair. None of them need power. Buy quality once, fit the kit to the work your house needs, and add to it as projects come up.
A set of heavy equipment keys covers many older machines from the major brands, because a lot of equipment shares a common key. It does not fit everything. Newer machines often use coded electronic keys, keypads or immobilizers, and a standard key will not start them. Keep a set for your own equipment, for helping neighbors who ask, and for a true life-or-death emergency. Starting a machine you do not own without permission is theft or unauthorized use in normal times.

What should I keep in a home repair kit for emergencies?
Build it in three groups: repair tapes (electrical, duct, self-fusing silicone, hockey and plumber's tape), fastening items like zip ties, hose clamps, carabiners, paracord, rivet and grommet kits, and plumbing and electrical bits such as an O ring set, heat shrink tubing, solder seal connectors and wire nuts. Nails, screws, bolts, solvents and glues are left out.
What is self-fusing silicone tape used for?
Self-fusing silicone tape bonds to itself without adhesive to make airtight, watertight seals. Its main jobs are emergency plumbing leak repairs, insulating electrical wires and sealing connections in harsh environments. It also fixes hoses, covers a small nick in a cord's outer jacket, adds grip to tool handles and temporarily seals containers.
What are alternative uses for duct tape?
Duct tape can secure bandages or hold a splint in place, waterproof shoes and gloves, twist into makeshift rope, and patch holes in tents, tarps and rain gear. It also works as a sticky insect trap, a container seal, a non-slip tool grip, a clothing repair, an emergency signal marker and a fix for book spines.
What tape should I use to stop a leaking hose or pipe?
Self-fusing silicone tape is my pick for leak repair. It fuses to itself with no adhesive and forms a waterproof, airtight seal, which suits emergency fixes on hoses and pipes. For threaded pipe connections, plumber's thread seal tape is what prevents leaks.
What fasteners should I stock for quick repairs?
