The Benefits of Mylar Bags

Mylar bags have become the gold standard for long-term food storage, and for good reason:

DurabilityMylar is a much stronger material than standard vacuum-sealed bags, making it highly resistant to tears, punctures, and moisture.
Light ProtectionMylar bags block out light entirely, which is essential for maintaining the integrity of your stored food.
Extended Shelf LifeWhen combined with vacuum sealing, Mylar bags offer maximum protection, giving you the longest shelf life possible for your oatmeal.

Save Money by Buying in Bulk

One of the biggest advantages of vacuum sealing is the ability to buy your ingredients in bulk. Not only does this help you save money in the long run, but it also ensures you have a stockpile of healthy, ready-to-eat meals at your fingertips. By taking a little time upfront to prepare and store your oatmeal, you’re giving yourself the gift of convenience and peace of mind, knowing that you’ve got food stored away for the future.

Self-Managed Insurance Plan: Preparing for What Comes Next

I like to think of food storage as part of a self-managed insurance plan, a proactive step to prepare for the unknown. In uncertain times, knowing you have nutritious, long-lasting meals stored away can provide immense peace of mind. Whether it’s an economic downturn, supply chain disruptions, or natural disasters, having a stock of vacuum-sealed oatmeal means you’re ready for whatever comes next.

Storage and shelf life

  • Oats:
    • Standard Vacuum-Sealed Pouch : 2-3 years
    • Mylar Bag with an oxygen absorber: 5-10 years, possibly longer. A mixed packet only lasts as long as its shortest-lived ingredient, so the milk powder and brown sugar set the real date, not the oats or the fruit.
  • Dry Milk Powder:
    • Standard Vacuum-Sealed Pouch: 2-5 years
    • Mylar Bag (Vacuum-Sealed): 5-10 years
  • White Sugar:
    • Indefinite in both standard vacuum-sealed pouches and Mylar bags
  • Brown Sugar:
    • Standard Vacuum-Sealed Pouch: 1-2+ years (may harden due to moisture)
    • Mylar Bag (Vacuum-Sealed): 1-2+ years
  • Cinnamon:
    • Standard Vacuum-Sealed Pouch: 2-3 years
    • Mylar Bag (Vacuum-Sealed): 5+ years
  • Salt:
    • Indefinite in both standard vacuum-sealed pouches and Mylar bags
  • Freeze-Dried Fruit (Apples, Strawberries, Bananas):
    • Standard Vacuum-Sealed Pouch: 1-2 years. Clear vacuum pouches let oxygen and light through over time.
    • Mylar Bag (Vacuum-Sealed): 15-25+ years

Questions this answers

Tap a question for the short answer.

How do I make my own instant oatmeal packets for food storage?

Buy the ingredients in bulk, then combine the dry mix for each packet: 1 cup oats, 3 Tbsp dry milk powder, a pinch of salt, plus sugar, cinnamon and freeze-dried fruit depending on the flavor. Vacuum seal each portion in a pouch or Mylar bag and store it in a cool, dry place.

What's the recipe for apple cinnamon oatmeal packets?

Each apple cinnamon packet holds 1 cup (80g) oats, 3 Tbsp (28g) dry milk powder, 2 to 4 Tbsp white sugar, 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and 1/2 cup (17g) freeze-dried apples broken into small pieces.

How long do vacuum sealed oats last?

Oats last 2 to 3 years in a standard vacuum-sealed pouch and 5 to 10 years, possibly longer, in a Mylar bag with an oxygen absorber. A mixed packet only lasts as long as its shortest-lived ingredient, so the milk powder and brown sugar set the real date. Brown sugar runs 1 to 2 or more years and may harden from moisture.

How long does oatmeal last in mylar bags?

In Mylar with an oxygen absorber, oats and dry milk powder each keep 5 to 10 years, cinnamon 5 or more years, freeze-dried fruit 15 to 25 or more years, and white sugar and salt indefinitely. Brown sugar is the limit at 1 to 2 or more years. Mylar is tougher than standard pouches and blocks light entirely.

How much water do I add to a homemade oatmeal packet?

Add 2 cups of water to the contents of a single packet in a medium saucepan. Bring it to a low simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until it thickens to the consistency you like, then take it off the heat and serve.

Can I vacuum seal oatmeal with freeze dried fruit?

Yes, two of my three packet recipes include freeze-dried fruit: apples in one, strawberries and bananas in the other, broken into small pieces. Freeze-dried fruit keeps 15 to 25 or more years in Mylar, but only 1 to 2 years in a standard vacuum-sealed pouch, since clear pouches let oxygen and light through over time.
