How long does white rice last?

Stored well, white rice has a real shelf life of 10 to 30 years, even though the label date says 4 to 5 years. Sealed in Mylar with an oxygen absorber and kept cool, rice can last 20 to 30 years.

How do I store white rice long term?

Seal white rice in Mylar with an O2 absorber, put the bags into a bucket, and keep it cool. Removing oxygen, blocking light and moisture, and sealing against pests is what gets rice to 20 to 30 years. Skip brown rice for this, since high-oil grains do not keep.

How do I tell if white rice has gone bad?

Look for discoloration, clumping, or small bugs like weevils, and smell it for mustiness or any unusual odor. Mold, moisture, off-odors, and pests are the warning signs that stored rice has gone bad.
